Erin Somsel #12
Class of 2020
My name is Erin Somsel. I am 16 years old and will be a junior at Tecumseh High School. I play center back. I have been playing soccer for 13 years. I started playing club soccer at age 7. I played on the local club team in Tecumseh for 2 years, and then moved to Jackson Rush, where I currently play. This will be my seventh year with Jackson Rush. I have been a captain for my club team for the past 3 years, and will be a captain of Tecumseh High School girls soccer team for the 2019 season. In the 2018 spring season, I was named to the All District First Team, Honorable Mention All SEC White, All County First Team, and THS Defender of the Year. I have a 4.1 GPA. In the future, I would like to play college soccer. I am interested in becoming a neurologist, so I am also looking for a college with a good Pre-Med program.
Coach Goodman: Erin is very consistent playing in every game and almost every minute in the 2018 season, as a Freshman she started on varsity and these last two seasons in high school has shown that she is captain material and will be a team captain in 2019. When Erin is in a one on one I don't worry, as I know she is going to get the tackle in, and most of the time she can use that turn over to make movement up the field (either by herself or making a great pass). This off-season, I have seen some major improvements happening in her game and I am excited to see her on the field in 2019! Erin is a hard worker off the field with a 4.1 GPA, and on the field would never ask to be taken off the field, the type of player who puts their body on the line. Erin would be able to play at any level of college soccer, and is an example of a traditional center back, which is something I don't see often in the era of players wanting the offensive glory, she will be the most experienced defender this season and I'm sure she will make the whole backline better.
Coach Twiss: Erin is the type of leader that absolutely brings the best out of the players and people around her. Erin is driven solely by her desire to be the best player she can be. As center back she is in the heart of the most important part of the field. Despite that you'll almost never say her name, exactly what you want from a defender. What makes Erin stand out is her ability to play with the ball at her feet and her relaxed nature in and near the possession. Where many defenders struggle with confidence on the ball, at times Erin is dribbling like an attacking mid. She's only going to continue to get better as she plays at higher and higher levels and continues to grow in her recognition of when to use her dribbling talents most effectively.
